Inhabitants of The UK are so in tune with their senses that they can recall the smell associated with a scene or location just by taking a look at a picture of it. That’s according to research released by a major camera manufacturer to mark the launch of its most recent digicams, which they claim capture memories in more clear detail than ever before.

The study, which was conducted across 23 countries, revealed that 47% of Brit folks surveyed can remember the scent associated with a picture, and many said they would actively take a picture of something based purely on the way in which it smells. The results also show that English girls are likely to concentrate on the perfume of their surroundings when taking a picture than men, with over 1/4 stating they’d capture an image of something that smells appealing for instance a rose garden. Commenting on the analysis, Dr Raquel Heinz, a leading world expert in the psychological science of scent and a teacher at a major school, recounted : This research shows just how powerful the connection between our memories and the sense of smell actually is. While an image can visually remind us of a particular point, if it is accompanied by smell it will elicit more emotional and evocative memories more than any other memory trigger.

When asked to rate a catalogue of scents that were most certain to trigger a memory, over 53% of continentals surveyed named the scent of freshly cut grass as their top Memory scent, with the scent of suntan lotion and baby talc coming in at second and third.

Referring to the results, Dr Heinz said: “For many years scientists have conducted research into the linkage between our senses and our capability to recall memories. My research shows that our sense of smell particularly has a uniquely intimate and direct connection with the area of the brain that controls emotional memory. Its not surprising that so many people chose freshly cut grass and suntan lotion as their top memory scents, as these smells are strongly associated with infancy – the time when our first smell memories are being formed. For many , smells associated with youth like the smell of a hot summers day in the fairground have a particularly powerful capability to trigger an emotional memory that takes them back to their youth.”

A representative for a major digicam manufacturer comments: “While an image is the ultimate way to capture and document lifes most dear memories, we would have liked to try something a little different and determine if there was another factor involved in recalling a certain point.” The company has been researching every angle that people pursue when wanting for new Sony cameras.
