Ever Have Photographs Help You Recall The Smell of a Memory?
Inhabitants of Britain are so in tune with their senses that they can recall the smell connected with a scene or location just by looking at a snapshot of it. That’s according to studies released by a major camera manufacturer to commemorate the launch of its most recent digicams, which they claim capture memories in more vivid detail than ever seen.
The study, which was conducted across 23 states, exposed that 47% of UK people surveyed can recollect the scent linked with an image, and many claimed they would actively take an image of something based solely on the way that it smells. The results also show that British girls are much more likely to be aware of the perfume of their surroundings when taking a picture than men, with over a quarter stating they’d capture an image of something that smells appealing as an example a rose garden. This research is very important for those that are searching for new Canon cameras.
Commenting on the study, Dr Raquel Heinz, a leading world expert in the psychological science of scent and a lecturer at a major college, said : This studies show just how strong the linkage between our memories and the sense of smell truly is. While an image can visually remind us of a specific point in time, if it is accompanied by scent it’ll arouse far more emotional and evocative memories more than any other memory trigger.
When asked to rate a list of scents that were most inclined to trigger a memory, over 53% of continentals surveyed named the smell of freshly cut grass as their top Memory scent, with the smell of sunscreen and baby talc coming in at 2nd and 3rd.
Talking about the results, Dr Heinz said: “For a number of years scientists have conducted research into the connection between our senses and our capability to recall memories. My analysis shows that our sense of smell particularly has a uniquely intimate and direct connection with the area of the brain that controls emotional memory. It isn’t surprising that so many folks chose freshly cut grass and sun lotion as their top memory scents, as these aromas are strongly connected with youth – the time when our first scent memories are being formed. For many , scents connected with youth like the scent of a hot summers day in the fairground have a particularly strong capability to trigger an emotional memory that takes them back to their youth.”
A representative for a major digital camera manufacturer comments: “While an image is the final way to capture and document lifes most valuable memories, we wanted to try something a little different and see whether there had been another factor involved in recalling a certain moment in time.” The manufacturer has been exploring every angle that people pursue when wanting for new Sony cameras.
This research into the scents linked with memories shows that not only do Europeans have a wonderful ability to remember certain scenes and locations based totally on scents and smells, the majority also make a studied attempt to maximize the power of these memories for themselves.
Compact digicams can save your memories better than ever before, and though they dont quite capture smell just yet, they actually can rouse the memory of it! So when you are looking for a new digital camera keep your eyes, and nose, open wide.
