Canon PIXMA MG8220 Multi Function Printer Review

The Canon MG8220 is part of Canon’s award-winning line of Wireless Photo All-in-One printers. The Pixma MG8220 is an inkjet printer that also copies, scans and faxes documents. Equipped with WiFi and Apple Airprint technology, this compact printer can be used to print wirelessly from you Ipad, Iphone, Macbook or any other Apple device that’s Airprint capable. This most advanced Canon Pixma model uses intuitive touch sensitive buttons for easy operation. Scanning resolution is also highest in this model at It comes with a Film Adapter Unit so you can also use it to scan film and slides.

You can, of course, also connect to a computer, both for printing photos and for general-purpose printing. And as one final source for photos, Canon supplies software that lets you capture and print HD frames from any Canon HD PowerShot or EOS camera. Other Canon PIXMA MG8220 features worth mention include printing on printable optical discs, automatic print duplexing (printing on both sides of a page), and two 150-sheet paper trays, which lets you keep both plain paper and photo loaded at the same time.

Having two types of paper loaded can come in handy, particularly if you want to use the printer for light-duty home office use as well. The same comment applies to the ability to scan to a USB memory key or a memory card. However, the PIXMA MG8220 lacks such office-centric features as fax support or an automatic document feeder (ADF), which is part of what limits it to light-duty home office use at most.

When I reviewed the Pixma MG6220, I suggested that if it offered just a little more, it could be an Editors’ Choice. The Canon Pixma MG8220 offers all the same features plus that little bit more in the form of scanning film as well as printing directly from film. If you don’t need to deal with slides or strips of film, by all means save a few dollars and choose the Pixma MG6220 or another printer instead. But if you need to scan film, the Canon Pixma MG8220 is both the clear choice and our new Editors’ Choice for a full-function home photo lab.
